Art Larson
Enrollment limited to seven.
Special location: Horton Tank Graphics, Hadley, MA

This and the following three images are broadsides made by Art’s students.

ome spend two days setting and printing a broadside of your own design! You will produce a small edition—copies to be shared with your fellow students.

You will learn to set metal and wood type by hand, choosing among more than 100 fonts of wood type as well as assorted metal types and ornaments.

Art will teach you how to print using Vandercook proof presses—there are two No. 4s and a 325 in the shop. Topics include roller setting and adjustment, packing the press, make ready, locking up the forme and fine inking.

Please do not arrive with a prepared text because the group will quickly generate the texts you will each set by using the renga (a Japanese poetic form) as understood by John Cage. (You needn’t be intimidated. Art says, "The renga process is simple and actually works better on some level if folks are not writers.")

Though experienced practitioners can expect to advance their skills, no previous printing experience is necessary to take this class.

Please note: Because solvents (mineral spirits, etc.) are used to clean up the presses, this class is not recommended for pregnant women or those with chemical sensitivities.
