Julia Miller has been a book conservator for many years. Her interest in historical bookbinding style and structure has extended into book art as a teacher and maker. Most of her own book art shows the influence of the structural and decorative elements she finds as she studies historical bindings as a volunteer in rare collections at the University of Michigan, researching and writing descriptions of notable bindings for the Library online catalog. She collects examples of historical bindings to aide in her teaching and to indulge a near-obsession with every kind of binding, especially those that carry their age and their history in elegant layers of decoration, repair, and marking.
