Linda Lembke
October 2–3, Saturday–Sunday
Tuition: $250   Materials: $30
Enrollment limited to twelve.

riting, illustration, book design, typesetting, printing, and bookbinding used to be separate, specialized professions. Today’s technology, however, makes many of these jobs approachable for an individual wishing to self-publish.

The majority of our two days will be spent on book construction. We will make several structures that lend themselves to books designed and printed on standard-size papers with personal computer equipment. These include both soft and hardcover single signature bindings (a signature is a gathering of pages), an accordion book, and a side-sewn binding.

In addition, we will look at many books and discuss their design elements. As time permits, we will review and share information about the book design and book printing features of Microsoft Word, Adobe InDesign, and other software.

The materials fee includes a set of essential book binding tools for you to keep: bone folder, needle, beeswax, piercing tool, C-thru ruler, and clips.

No previous bookbinding experience is necessary. Beginners encouraged!

About one month before the workshop, registrants will receive a tool list, directions to the studio, and any other pertinent logistical information via email. Workshop hours are usually from 9:30 until about 5:00. Please do not buy an airplane ticket or make any other non-refundable payment before checking with us to be sure the workshop for which you have registered has sufficient enrollment.
